If you are one of 80 million people worldwide diagnosed with glaucoma, it’s important to know what steps to take to slow or prevent its progression, especially if it is detected early.

While glaucoma can sometimes lead to irreversible blindness, lifestyle changes and medication can reduce its effect on one’s eye health and overall quality of life.

By getting informed and making healthy choices, you can establish a healthy routine that helps you manage your glaucoma.

Tips for Managing Glaucoma and Protecting Your Eye Health

Lowering your eye pressure is crucial for managing glaucoma. Depending on your unique situation, treatment options may include prescription eye drops, medications, laser treatment, surgery or a combination of treatments.

Here are additional ways to manage your glaucoma and protect your eye health:

Try to keep your eyes clean and free of irritants that can increase your eye pressure.

Avoid rubbing your eyes. Not touching your eyes can be challenging, even though some glaucoma medications might make your eyes blurry, itchy or uncomfortable.

Thoroughly sanitise your hands before and after using glaucoma eye drops.

Wear goggles when swimming and protective eyewear when participating in sports or working outdoors.

Eat healthy foods and lower your intake of caffeine and sodium. Maintaining a balanced and nutritious diet helps prevent fluid retention, which can negatively affect your eyes. It also promotes overall eye health.

Get enough exercise to keep your body healthy and maintain a healthy weight. We recommend checking with your doctor before starting an exercise program.

Stop smoking or using tobacco, as it can make glaucoma worse and impact your general health.

Reduce daily stresses in your life and make time for fun and relaxation!

Take care of your whole-body health and wellness. Keeping in good general health is essential and directly impacts eye health.
