Did you know Eye disorders are the most common long-term health problems experienced by children?

Myopia is growing rapidly amongst children. Exacerbating the problem is the amount of time that kids are spending in front of small screens such as mobile devices and tablets, a lifestyle situation that is only predicted to grow.

According to Good Vision for Life: “the prevalence among Australian 12 year-olds doubled between 2005 and 2011. Myopia in kids tends to progress or get worse throughout childhood, and higher levels of myopia are associated with higher eye disease risks in adulthood. Over the last 15 years myopia has increased from 20% to 31% in 17 years olds. If your child already wears glasses, you can do something to stop their vision worsening. If they don’t, you can assess their risk of developing myopia.”

Good vision is essential for a child’s social, educational and physical development. Most children with behavioural or academic problems fail one or more visual tests. Vision problems can prevent a child from realising their full potential

Common Signs of Children’s Vision Problems

Preserving healthy sight for a lifetime begins with early detection. Common signs of possible vision problems in school-aged children include:

  • Holding reading materials too close to eyes
  • Tilting head or closing one eye when watching TV or reading
  • Using fingers to trace words when reading
  • Constantly rubbing eyes
  • Has red or watery eyes
  • Frequent blinking or squinting
  • Complains about headaches, blurred or double vision
  • Shows extreme light sensitivity
  • Exhibits lack of attention or fatigue during school

What can I do?

Parents are often surprised to learn that there are alternate treatments options for worsening Myopia rather than just prescribing stronger glasses.

Step one is to ensure your children have a comprehensive vision examination at your local optometrist.
