How Cataracts Affect Your Vision - And What You Can Do About It

If you’re over 60 and you’ve ever felt like you're looking through a fogged-up window, especially in bright light or at night - you might be experiencing the effects of cataracts. As one of the most common vision issues we come across at Envision in our over 60 patients, cataracts can have a significant impact on your quality of life. Fortunately, with early detection and the modern treatment options on offer, clearer vision is well within reach.

So...What Are Cataracts?

Cataracts occur when the natural lens inside your eye becomes cloudy. The lens, which normally helps to focus light onto your retina, can begin to break down over time. As the proteins within the lens degrade, they may clump together and create cloudy areas that scatter light, making it harder for you to see clearly. Our patients with cataracts often describe it as similar to looking through a dirty window. Colours may appear dull, lights may cause glare, and your simple everyday tasks like reading or driving at night can become increasingly difficult.

Why Do Cataracts Develop?

The most common reason cataracts develop is simply age. Over the years, the eye’s lens can suffer from wear and tear that leads to gradual clouding.

However, cataracts can also be accelerated or triggered by other factors, including:

  • Long-term exposure to UV light without adequate eye protection
  • Eye injuries or trauma
  • Certain health conditions, such as diabetes
  • Medications, particularly long-term use of corticosteroids
  • Exposure to toxins
  • Congenital conditions, where babies are born with cataracts or develop them in early childhood

Recognising the Symptoms

Cataracts tend to develop slowly, meaning you might not notice symptoms right away. As they progress, the following signs may become apparent:

  • Blurred or hazy vision
  • Difficulty seeing at night
  • Glare or halos around lights
  • Faded or yellowed colours
  • Frequent changes in glasses prescriptions
  • Double vision in one eye

If you experience any of these symptoms, a comprehensive eye exam is essential to rule out cataracts or any other eye condition.

How Cataracts Are Treated

Our optometrists at Envision are trained to detect and monitor cataracts through regular comprehensive eye exams. In the early stages, a change in prescription glasses may be adequate in helping manage symptoms. But if the cataract worsens and begins affecting your daily life, we may refer you to a trusted ophthalmologist for assessment to consider surgery.

Cataract surgery is the most effective treatment. It involves removing the clouded lens and replacing it with a clear artificial one. The day surgery procedure is quick, safe, and performed under local anesthesia. Many patients report a dramatic improvement in vision - some even find they no longer have a need for glasses or contact lens afterward.

Why Early Detection Matters

While cataracts are not preventable in most cases, early diagnosis can make a huge difference in maintaining your vision and lifestyle. Regular eye exams, especially for those over 60, can catch cataracts in their early stages - allowing you to maintain your sight for the future and avoid sudden vision issues or loss.
