There are some questions our Envision patients ask more frequently than others, and we receive many queries wondering what's the best contact lens these days. Daily disposables are contact lenses that are only worn once, with a fresh pair of lenses used each time. As many patients will wear their contact lenses all day, this means a fresh pair of contacts each day. They have gained popularity in recent years, with their offer of convenience and hygiene benefits. However, it's always important to weigh the pros and cons before deciding. So, let's delve into it!

Pros of daily disposable contacts:

  • Convenience and Hygiene: One of the most significant advantages of daily disposables is their convenience. They eliminate any need for cleaning and storing solutions as you discard them after each use. This saves you time and reduces the risk of eye infections due to poor lens maintenance. Daily disposables are especially beneficial for those with busy lifestyles or who frequently travel, as they provide a hassle-free option.
  • Comfort and Freshness: Daily disposables are made from high-quality materials that offer exceptional comfort. Each lens is fresh, free from protein deposits or other debris that can accumulate over time with other lens types. This provides a comfortable wearing experience, even for individuals with sensitive eyes or dry eye conditions.
  • Reduced Risk of Eye Infections: Since daily disposables are used only once and then discarded, they minimise the accumulation of dirt, allergens, and microorganisms, significantly reducing the risk of developing bacterial or fungal eye infections. This makes them an excellent option if you are prone to eye infections or have a compromised immune system.
  • Compatibility with Allergies: If you suffer from allergies like hay fever, daily disposables offer a fresh start every day. Allergens such as pollen, dust, or pet dander can accumulate on your contacts, leading to discomfort and irritation. By using a new pair of lenses daily, you can minimize exposure to allergens and help alleviate the symptoms, providing much-needed relief.

Cons to consider

  • Cost: One of the main drawbacks of daily disposables is their cost. Since you need a new pair of lenses for each use, the expense can add up over time, depending how often you want to wear them. Compared to other types of contacts, such as monthly or fortnightly disposables, the cumulative cost of daily disposables can be higher if you want to wear your contacts every day. You may want to consider your budget and evaluate whether the added convenience and hygiene benefits outweigh the financial aspect.
  • Environmental Impact: Daily disposable lenses generate more waste compared to other types of lenses. Each lens, along with its packaging, contributes to plastic waste that can harm the environment. Please be sure to never flush your contacts down the sink or toilet, and if in doubt ask our team about proper contact lens disposal.

As we've mentioned, daily disposable contacts can provide numerous benefits, including convenience, hygiene, comfort, and reduced risk of eye infections - and may be especially suitable for those with busy lifestyles or allergies.
