Ready to embark on your next adventure? As you plan your next getaway—whether you're skipping the Australian summer for some cooler climate or enjoying a cozy staycation—don't forget to take care of one of your most important travel companions: your eyes. While you focus on packing clothes, toiletries, and gadgets, it's easy to overlook the importance of eye care when you're heading away from home. But with a little preparation, you can ensure your vision stays sharp and healthy throughout your trip.

Here are some essential eye care tips to consider before you embark on your holiday adventure:

1. Pack a Spare Pair of Glasses and Sunglasses

Travel can be unpredictable, and your glasses or sunglasses are at risk of accidental damage or loss. Whether you're travelling around the globe or on a staycation it's a smart idea to pack a spare pair. You never know when a little mishap might occur – from an unexpected swim in the ocean to misplacing them in a crowded city, anything can happen. Having a spare pair for this reason can be a game-changer! It makes no difference if you're hiking through mountains or relaxing on the beach, having a backup ensures you're never without clear vision.

Depending on your destination, finding a suitable optometrist to prescribe new glasses could be time-consuming or challenging. And if your prescription is at all complex it can take days or weeks to get a suitable replacement to get you through. Save yourself the stress by being prepared.

And don't forget about sunglasses: Sunglasses do more than just block UV rays—they protect your eyes from dust, wind, and debris in new environments. Consider a spare pair of sunnies to ensure you're covered no matter where you go.

Remember, it's wise to split your glasses up when packing - stash one pair in your checked luggage and keep another in your carry-on. That way, if your luggage unfortunately goes missing, you're still covered! A little preparation goes a long way.

2. Use a Sturdy Hard Case

Bags can take a beating during travel, whether they're getting tossed in overhead compartments, checked in with the airline, or crammed into the car.  To ensure your glasses survive the trip, always pack them in a sturdy hard case. This simple precaution will help protect your frames and lenses from getting crushed or scratched.  Don't have a hard case on hand? Visit the team and pick one up before you go.

 3. Carry Your Prescription with you.

Even with the best planning, things can go wrong. If your glasses or contacts are lost or broken, having your prescription handy can make replacing them much easier. Consider keeping a digital copy of your prescription on your phone, or a physical copy tucked safely in your luggage.

 4. Don’t Forget Contact Lens Supplies

If you wear contact lenses, make sure you have enough supplies to last the duration of your trip, plus a little extra. Pack your cleaning solution, contact lens case, and daily disposables if you use them. It’s also a good idea to bring your glasses along (if you have a pair), even if you plan to wear contacts most of the time. Your eyes may need a break after long days of sightseeing or exposure to different climates.

 5. Protect Against Dry Eyes

Traveling, especially on planes, can dry out your eyes. The dry, pressurized cabin air in planes can leave your eyes feeling irritated and scratchy. To combat this, bring along lubricating eye drops to keep your eyes moist and comfortable. If you’re going to a sunny or windy destination, make sure to wear sunglasses to shield your eyes from the elements.

6. Schedule a Pre-Travel Eye Check

Before jetting off, it’s a great idea to schedule an eye check-up to ensure your prescription is up to date. If you’re due for a consultation, new glasses, or contacts, it’s better to sort this out before you leave than to deal with discomfort or unclear vision on your holiday.

7. Stay Safe in the Sun

While you're busy soaking up the sun, remember that UV rays can cause long-term damage to your eyes. Sunglasses are essential for blocking harmful UV rays and protecting your vision. Make sure to choose a pair that shields your eyes from both UVA and UVB rays.
