Protecting our eyes is essential for reducing the risk of vision loss and eye diseases, such as glaucoma and cataracts. At Envision Optical, you and your family can receive preventive and curative treatments in our Tweed Heads and Burleigh Waters eye clinics, including routine eye exams.

What Happens During an Eye Exam?

An eye exam at Envision Optical involves a series of tests to evaluate different aspects of your vision and check your eyes for signs of disease. Your optometrist may use special instruments, shine lights around your eyes and ask that you look through various lenses.

Routine eye exams are important because they allow your optometrist to detect eye health concerns in the earliest stages. The sooner we identify a potential issue, the sooner we can provide the appropriate treatment.

Your optometrist can also help you adapt or correct vision changes and offer tips for eye care and hygiene, including sun exposure and digital screen use.

When Are Eye Exams Needed?

Your age, health and risk of developing eye issues determine how often you need eye exams.

Children Age Three and Younger

Pediatricians typically check children’s eyes for healthy development and common eye problems, such as crossed eyes or lazy eyes. A comprehensive eye exam will check for vision problems and eye alignment.

School-Age Children and Adolescents

We recommend your child get routine eye exams before entering kindergarten. Your child’s pediatrician can recommend how often they need eye exams.

Adults

It’s advisable to have an eye exam every two years unless otherwise recommended by your optometrist. For those over the age of 65, eye exams are encouraged yearly.

You may consider getting your eyes checked more frequently if you:

  • Wear contact lenses or glasses
  • Have a chronic disease that increases the risk of eye disease, such as diabetes
  • Take medications with serious side effects that can affect the eyes
  • Have a family history of vision loss or eye disease
