Your eyes are vital sensory organs that play a crucial role in how you perceive the world around us. However, just like any other part of your body, your eyes can be susceptible to various diseases and conditions that can affect your vision and overall eye health. At Envision Optical we find our Gold Coast patients are very keen for advice on eye health and any key symptoms to look out for. So, let's explore some of the most common eye diseases and conditions that you may encounter.

Refractive Errors

Developing refractive errors, like myopia (nearsightedness), hyperopia (farsightedness), and astigmatism, are among the most common eye conditions. These errors occur when the shape of your eye prevents light from focusing directly on the retina, leading to blurred vision. Thankfully, corrective lenses, such as glasses or contact lenses, can effectively manage your refractive errors.

Cataracts

Cataract is a condition caused by the clouding of the eye's natural lens, leading to decreased vision quality. For many people, it's like looking through a dirty window instead of a clean window. A cataract will often develop slowly from UV damage and can cause symptoms such as blurry vision, sensitivity to light, and difficulty seeing at nighttime. We can diagnose and monitor the presence of cataracts, and if cataracts progress, our optometrists may refer you to a specialist to discuss surgery. Cataract surgery, where the clouded lens is replaced with an artificial one, is a successful treatment option that may restore clear vision, and for some people, without the need for glasses or contact lenses.

Glaucoma

Glaucoma involves damage to the optic nerve at the back of your eye, typically due to raised fluid pressure inside the eye. Glaucoma is often referred to as the "silent thief of sight" because it can progress without noticeable symptoms until significant side vision loss occurs. Early detection, through regular eye exams, and management are crucial to prevent further damage. Fortunately, most of our patients can undergo successful glaucoma treatment, often with simple eye drops to lower eye pressure. This may be an effective treatment that prevents progressive nerve damage.

Age-Related Macular Degeneration (AMD)

Macular degeneration is the leading cause of vision loss in Australia. AMD affects the macula, the central part of your retina responsible for sharp, detailed vision. As the name suggests, it is more common among older adults. There are two types: dry AMD, which progresses slowly, and wet AMD, which can cause sudden and severe vision loss. Our optometrists can assess your risk and closely monitor your macula health through 3D OCT imaging and Macular Pigment Ocular Density (MPOD) screening before AMD becomes apparent. We are then able to provide tailored guidance as to how you can best keep your maculae healthy through simple diet and lifestyle enhancements. We may also refer you, if necessary, to a specialist for macular degeneration treatments, which may help slow AMD progression.

Diabetic Retinopathy

Did you know that 1 person every 5 minutes in Australia are diagnosed with diabetes... and that it can profoundly impact your eyes? People with diabetes are at risk of developing diabetic retinopathy, a condition that damages blood vessels in the retina. This can lead to vision loss or even blindness if left untreated. Through wide-field retinal imaging and yearly comprehensive eye health checks, we can help monitor for any changes to the blood vessels in the retina and recommend lifestyle enhancements to help prevent these changes occurring. If further specialist treatment is required, we will provide you with a suitable referral.

Conjunctivitis

Commonly known as pink eye, conjunctivitis is an inflammation of the conjunctiva, the clear tissue covering the white part of your eye and lining of the inner eyelids. It is often caused by allergies, bacteria or viruses, and our optometrists are able to determine which type of conjunctivitis you may have. Each type of conjunctivitis has a different treatment regime, and while most cases are not serious and may clear up on their own, some types, especially those caused by infections, are best to be treated and reviewed by our optometrists.
