Here at Envision Optical, we pride ourselves on being able to provide our Gold Coast patients with the latest in diagnostic technology. OCT scanning is an important assessment tool within our clinics - offering a non-invasive, cutting-edge method to obtain high-resolution images used to analyse the layers of your retina, optic nerve, and anterior segment of the eye. This powerful diagnostic technology has become indispensable within both of our modern optometry locations, providing numerous benefits, as outlined below, for both us and our patients alike.
Early Detection of Eye Diseases:
One of the most significant advantages of OCT scans is their ability to detect early signs of eye diseases such as glaucoma, macular degeneration, and diabetic retinopathy. By capturing detailed cross-sectional images of the retina, OCT allows us to identify subtle changes in your eyes retinal structure, often before any symptoms are noticeable. In many cases, symptoms are not noticeable until the disease has progressed significantly when treatment may no longer be possible. Early detection is crucial in managing these conditions effectively and preventing irreversible vision damage – the key here is maintaining your regular examinations.
Enhanced Diagnostic Accuracy:
Traditional methods of eye examination can sometimes leave room for interpretation. In contrast, OCT scans provide us objective, quantifiable data, reducing the likelihood of misdiagnosis. The high-resolution images enable precise measurement of retinal thickness, optic nerve health, and other critical parameters, allowing us a more accurate diagnoses to tailor your treatment plan.
Monitoring Disease Progression:
OCT scans are not only valuable for initial diagnosis but also for monitoring the progression of eye diseases over time. By having regular OCT scan assessments as part of your scheduled appointments, we can track changes in your retinal and optic nerve structure, enabling timely adjustments to our treatment strategies. This ongoing monitoring is essential for managing chronic conditions and preserving your visual function.
Promotes Clear Communication and Interactions:
The visual nature of OCT scans helps us better explain your eye health status during your consultation. By viewing and discussing the images, you can gain a clearer understanding of your own eye health and the reasoning behind recommended treatments. This enhanced understanding helps keep you on track in your treatment program.
So, What Can You Expect?
It's safe, quick, and pain-free!! The scan is not harmful to the eyes and does not produce any side effects. An OCT scan involves you sitting comfortably in front of an OCT machine, while placing your head in a chin rest in front of you. Then, remaining still, you will look at a coloured light inside the machine which will allow the machine to map the back of your eye using harmless light waves (similar to a bar code scanner).
With the inclusion of OCT scans in our modern practices, at Burleigh Waters and Tweed, we are provided unparalleled insights into your eye health status. We recommend you consider an OCT scan at your next appointment. You can book online here. We look forward to seeing you soon.
