The Food Fitness Wellness Journey
It is with pleasure we have Rebecca Neale of Food Fitness Wellness joining us again in March to share her experience with Envision Optical and how it relates to her journey. Today, Rebecca talks about the MPOD test she had with us and how she connected this experience to a fantastic recipe of hers for a Green Glow Smoothie which is great for your eye health.
Rebecca’s MPOD Experience
When I first met Andrew Bowden of Envision Optical in 2014, I was very impressed by his passion for what he does and found him to be a wealth of knowledge. It was clear to me that we are on the same journey. He truly cares about the future of his patient’s eye health and ability to see as best as they can.
I was lucky enough to spend time with Andrew last month experiencing this revolutionary device called MPOD. It is a machine for testing your Macular Pigment Optical Density and Envision Optical are the first to have this technology in Queensland. I even got to wear a pirate eye patch! Andrew explained the macular pigment optical density is very important for your eye health. There was a great blog post he had written that explained this in more detail. You can read it here – “How Do We Measure Macular Pigment Density?“. It was fantastic to be able to monitor this as your eye health is so important.
What stood out for me on the nutrition side was the benefits of Lutein to your macular health and pigment optical density. Lutein is a nutrient that helps protect the macular region of the eye from free radical damage. It is easy to obtain Lutein through diet and is found in many dark green leafy veggies, especially spinach, collard greens, kale, broccoli and brussels sprouts.
With this in mind, I thought it was quite relevant today for me to share with you one of my secrets. People often comment on how beautiful and clear my skin is and how bright my eyes look. I do believe there are numerous reasons why, not only am I very conscious of what I put on the outside topically, but what I put in my mouth daily contributes to my overall glow. I really believe what you eat shows. Food is beauty! So, if you eat lots of fatty and greasy colourless foods, guess what you will end up feeling and looking like? Yes, you guessed it a big grease ball… well not quite, but you get the idea!
What is the first thing I tell all my clients to do? Eat greens! Eat lots of them! Green alkalising foods! Consuming more plant-based foods helps to renew your energy. As Andrew explained, it is also great for your eye health. Did you know that greens have more valuable nutrients than any other food groups on earth? Greens, I believe, are the super heroes of the plant world; they have the powerful ability to detoxify the body, aid in digestion and give us glowing skin, hair and nails.
I find the easiest way to include more greens in your diet is by drinking a green smoothie or juice. Blending greens makes the full spectrum of nutrition readily available to your body, enabling you to absorb maximum amounts of nutrients from your green foods. Nutrients are encased inside plants cells, so breaking down the cell walls gives us the access to them. You might also be surprised to know that greens have high quality, easy to absorb amino acids.
My favourite start to the day! Not only is it delicious, it’s simple and you will love the way it makes you feel!

Green Glow Smoothie
Rebecca has been wonderful to share with us her recipe for a Green Glow Smoothie. This is a fantastic recipe for your eye health. The greens are full of Lutein and Zeaxanthin which have been shown to prevent cataracts and macular degeneration, and improve visual performance and reduce sensitivity to glare. Alongside this, spinach and kale are a good source of Beta-Carotene, and the papaya a great source of Vitamin A, both which may protect against night blindness and dry eyes.
- 1 handful of organic sprouts
- 1 handful of baby spinach
- a few cos lettuce leaves or kale
- 4 slices of cucumber (skin left on when organic)
- ½ frozen banana
- Squeeze of lemon
- ½ green apple
- a few chunks of papaya (great for keeping your skin looking beautiful and youthful. It’s very high in Vitamins A and C, also containing a enzyme to help aid digestion)
- 250ml coconut or filtered water
How To Make:
- Add all ingredients to blender, pulse and blend until smooth.
Rebecca always blends up the greens first, then adds in the extras.
