Welcome Salma

Salma has worked for a public health eye care organisation for 8 years where her main role was providing eye care services within Aboriginal community controlled settings. She also has experience in the development and implementation of eye care education within various international projects.

Her work began with the Brian Holden Vision Institute, in 2008, in the public health division as a community optometrist, where she provided eye care services through the 100 locations within NSW for a period of 18 months. This was a great experience and ultimately led to her passion for providing eye care services within Aboriginal communities. Salma also got to see a lot of country NSW!

Salma then worked within a few Pacific Island projects as a project development officer, where her main role was managing the setup of vision centres within the local hospital systems of Samoa and the Solomon Islands. This involved providing equipment to perform refractions and cutting and fitting lenses for spectacles; working with local health bodies and hospitals to implement management and procurement systems in order to supply spectacles for the local communities that were equitable and sustainable. She was also involved in developing and implementing refraction refresher courses, low vision training, and management training of staff.

Next Salma took on the role of education development officer, providing global education support in developing short refresher courses needed within projects, as well as the development and implementation of online education programs such as the RAHC (Remote Arial Health Corps) online primary eye care modules and Aboriginal eye care training delivery. She has also authored a paper on the Analysis of the role of regional eye health care workers and their training needs which she presented at the NACCHO  conference in 2014. In the last 14 months, Salma has been working as a locum optometrist working for private and corporate optometrists throughout Australia.

Salma is very experienced in all aspects of eye health and has a caring disposition. She is passionate about providing accessible eye care to disadvantaged communities and educating the community on the importance of regular eye exams.

When not working Salma enjoys spending time with her family and doing community work.
