In wintertime, as temperatures drop outside, dry air, and various environmental factors can impact our eye health. Your eyes may feel a little uncomfortable, becoming more susceptible to vision loss, irritability, dry eye, or inflammation. This is because cold temperatures and harsh winds constrict the blood vessels in your eyes and corneas, which in turn can affect your vision and cause discomfort. We will often see many people in our clinics throughout the season suffering from the above symptoms. So, we’re here to help with a few suggestions.

Check below our 6 valuable tips to maintain optimal eye health during the winter months:

  1. Stay Hydrated: During winter, indoor heating systems and chilly winds can cause dryness in the air, leading to dry eyes. It's essential to stay hydrated by drinking an adequate amount of water daily. Additionally, using a humidifier in your home can help maintain a more comfortable level of moisture in the air.
  2. Shield Your Eyes: Cold winds, snow or glare from the winter sun can be harsh on your eyes. Protect them by wearing sunglasses that provide 100% UV protection. This will not only shield your eyes from harmful UV rays but also help reduce glare, and if holidaying at the snow - reflection of sunlight off the snow.
  3. Maintain a Balanced Diet: A well-balanced diet rich in vitamins and nutrients is crucial for maintaining healthy eyes. Incorporate foods high in omega-3 fatty acids, vitamin C, vitamin E, and zinc into your meals. Leafy greens, fish, citrus fruits, nuts, and seeds are excellent choices to support your eye health.
  4. Take Frequent Breaks from Screens: With the colder weather, we tend to spend more time indoors, often in front of screens. However, prolonged screen time can strain your eyes and contribute to dryness and discomfort. Remember to take regular breaks, practice the 20-20-20 rule (look away every 20 minutes at something 20 feet away for 20 seconds), and blink frequently to keep your eyes lubricated.
  5. Keep Your Eyes Moisturized: Dry indoor air can worsen dry eye symptoms. Combat this by using artificial tears or lubricating eye drops to keep your eyes moisturized. Consult our team to find the right eye drops for your specific needs.
  6. Visit Our Envision Team: Regular eye exams are essential for maintaining good eye health throughout the year. Schedule an appointment with us to ensure your eyes are in optimal condition and contact us at any time if you have concerns regarding your eye health.

By considering these 6 helpful tips, you can safeguard your vision and maintain healthy eyes all through the winter season. Prioritizing your eye health will allow you to enjoy the winter months while protecting your most valuable sense—your vision.
