Macular degeneration, particularly age-related macular degeneration (AMD), is one of the leading causes of vision loss in older Australians. At Envision Optical, we believe that being informed is the first step toward protecting your sight. So, here’s everything you should know about AMD - what it is, why it matters, and how you can take steps today to preserve your eye health.

What Is Macular Degeneration?

Macular degeneration is a condition that affects the macula — the central part of the retina responsible for detailed central vision. This is the vision you use to read, recognise faces, drive, and see fine detail. There are two main types:

Dry AMD: The more common form, marked by the gradual thinning of the macula.

Wet AMD: Less common but more severe, involving abnormal blood vessel growth under the retina that can lead to rapid vision loss.

Symptoms: What to Look Out For

Early signs of AMD might be subtle. You may notice:

  • Blurred or distorted vision
  • Difficulty recognising faces
  • Needing more light to read
  • A dark or empty spot in the centre of your vision

Because symptoms can creep in slowly, your routine eye exams are crucial in catching the condition early.

Who Is at Risk?

Age is the biggest risk factor, especially for those over 50. But other contributors include:

  • Family history or genetic predisposition
  • Smoking (doubles your risk!)
  • High blood pressure
  • Obesity
  • Light eye colour
  • Prolonged UV exposure

How AMD Affects Your Life

Living with AMD can impact many everyday tasks. Reading becomes more difficult, colours seem duller, and driving (especially at night) can become unsafe. Early detection can make a real difference in maintaining your independence and quality of life.

Diagnosing Macular Degeneration

At Envision Optical, we use advanced tools such as optical coherence tomography (OCT) and Optomap Wide Field Scans with autofluorescence to detect changes in the macula before you notice symptoms. Regular eye tests, especially if you're over 50 or have a family history of AMD, are key.

Treatment and Management

While there's currently no cure, AMD can often be managed effectively:

  • Wet AMD is treated with anti-VEGF injections to control abnormal blood vessel growth.
  • Dry AMD may benefit from specific vitamin supplements (known as the AREDS2 formula), healthy lifestyle choices, and regular monitoring. There are also new drug treatments being launched.

Can AMD Be Prevented?

You can’t always prevent AMD entirely, but these steps help reduce your risk:

  • Quit smoking
  • Wear UV-protective sunglasses
  • Eat a diet high in leafy greens, berries, and omega-3-rich fish
  • Maintain a healthy weight and exercise regularly
  • Manage blood pressure and cholesterol levels

The Future of AMD Treatment

Research is ongoing in exciting areas like gene therapy, stem cell treatment, and retinal implants. These advances offer hope for more effective treatments — and fingers crossed possibly even a cure in the future.
